    Series consists of the personal and financial papers of the Baroness Macdonald. Baroness Macdonald was born Susan Agnes Bernard in Jamaica in 1836. She married John A. Macdonald in 1867 and they had one child, Mary, born in 1869. On 14 August 1891 she was created Baroness Macdonald of Earnscliffe, a title she held until her death in 1920. Included among the papers are Baroness Macdonald's general correspondence for 1845 and 1884 to 1910. The series also contains her personal diary which describes the Macdonalds' daily life and political events of the time for 1867-1872, 1875 and 1883 (Vol. 559A). The diary begins just four days after Confederation, when John A. Macdonald became Canada's first Prime Minister. Additional records include letters of sympathy following the death of Sir John (Vols. 560-561). One of these letters was sent by Queen Victoria. There are also many addresses of condolence from communities and organizations across Canada. (Vols. 561 to 566A, oversize addresses in Vols. 766 to 800). The warrent which created Lady Macdonald Baroness Macdonald of Earnscliffe is available in Vol. 566B. Baroness Macdonald's recipe book and a notebook on church history are located in Vol. 567. Financial records, including household accounts, bank books and cancelled cheques, as well as documents relating to Lady Macdonald's marriage settlement, will and estate are located in Vols. 567 and 568. The series also includes an account book of Sir John A. Macdonald for the years 1879 to 1881.
