Pound, Ezra, 1885-1972 : Ezra Pound, born and raised in the American midwest, received his education from the University of Pennsylvania and Hamilton College. Shortly after he had taught briefly at Wabash College, he left the United States and took up residence in Europe. He first lived in London, where he established a reputation as a literary critic and helped to inaugurate the Imagist school of poetry. He also became European correspondent for Poetry magazine, a position which enabled him to promote the hitherto unrecognized talents of poets such as Robert Frost, T.S. Eliot, and Marianne Moore. Pound remained in London from 1908 until 1920, when he left for Paris. After four years in France, he settled at Rapallo, Italy, where he lived until the end of World War II.

During World War II, he broadcasted facist propaganda over Italian radio which was aimed at Allied troops. This activity resulted in his incarceration after the end of the war. Returning to the United States to face trial for treason, he was judged to be of unsound mind and was committed to a hospital in Washington, D.C., where he remained from 1946 until 1958. After concerted appeals from prominent Americans, led by Robert Frost, the indictment against Pound was withdrawn and he was subsequently released in 1958. After his release, he returned to Italy.

Pound's major works include Hugh Selwyn Mauberly (1920) and a series of poems titled The Cantos, the writing of which occupied most of his life.
