Fonds consists of a diary, 1899-1900, kept by W.J. Green describing his South African War service with the Royal Canadian Regiment, 2nd Special Service Battalion, "B" Company. Included are two scrapbooks of letters, programmes and newspaper clippings, a booklet and miscellaneous items, 1899-1900.

The fonds also includes photographs of Canadian soldiers in South Africa during the Boer War; a scrapbook containing photographs of young men leaving Valcartier, Québec, for training as part of the first contingent of the Canadian Expeditionary Force and farewell celebrations at St. Thomas, Ontario, prior to their departure.

Green, William James, 1875-1958 : William James Green, military officer, born in 1875 at St. Thomas, Ont., was in the lumber business with his father as part of J.M. Green and Sons. He was a member of the local militia, the 15th "Elgin" Battalion of Infantry, locally known as the 5th Regiment and was commissioned a lieutenant 28 July 1894. In 1899, he enlisted in the Royal Canadian Regiment for service in South Africa. Wounded at Paardeberg, he was discharged from military service 25 December 1900.

In 1900, he returned to his position in J.M. Green and Sons and reorganized the business as the Green Lumber Company. During World War I, as a Lieutenant-Colonel he commanded the 91st Battalion Canadian Expeditionary Force. The 91st Battalion was an outgrowth of the 25th "Elgin" Battalion.
