    Fonds consists of material relating to Steel's participation in World War One; service with the Canadian Permanent Force as chief engineer responsible for the planning and construction of the North West Territories radio system; as Commissioner of the Canadian Radio Broadcasting Corporation; as consulting engineer; and as political activist. Fonds also contains 8,124 photographs, ca. 1914-1945, which relate to the career of Lieutenant-Colonel W.A. Steel; personnel and activities of the Royal Canadian Corps of Signals and of the N.W.T. and Yukon Radio System. Five photographs also reproduce portraits. Also included are five sketches relating to Steel's career as an army officer in World War I; a souvenir booklet of ten views of Butchart Gardens, Victoria, B.C.; and a print of the Magna Carta Regis Johannis A D 1215, produced by the Overseas Publicity Service (as of 7 December 1992, this print was unlocated). Fonds also contains three maps, n.d., which pertain to radio station broadcast coverage, and belong to file #160 of volume 29 of the Commissioner of the Canadian Radio Broadcasting Corporation series.

    Steel, William Arthur, 1890-1968: Lieutenant Colonel William Arthur Steel, engineer, graduated from the University of Toronto in 1915 as an electrical engineer. During World War I he served with the Royal Canadian Corps of signals. In the 1920s he joined the Canadian Permanent Force as chief engineer of the Royal Canadian Corps of Signals, where he was responsible for the North West Territories radio system and for the air navigation radio system for Canadian civil aviation. He was director of the National Research Council's Radio Division, 1931-1933 and Commissioner in charge of engineering operations for the Canadian Radio Broadcasting Commission, 1933-1936. He subsequently worked as a consulting engineer on navigation and radar equipment. He was also involved in producing such films as "To the Arctic" covering Lord Byng's trip to the North West Territories in 1925. In the late 1930s he served as secretary-treasurer of W.D. Herridge's New Democracy Movement. See: Canadian Encyclopedia, p. 1757.

    Acquired in 1969 from Vera I. Steel of Ottawa, Ont. A number of manuscript items were received in 1983 and 1985 from Documentary Art and Photography Division.
    Maps were removed from file #160 of volume 29 of the Commissioner of the Canadian Radio Broadcasting Corporation series for preservation reasons. Reduced copies of these maps were placed in file #160.
    The print of the Magna Carta was unlocated as of 7 December 1992.
