2010-2011 Annual Reporting — Expenditures for Travel, Hospitality and Conferences

As required by the Treasury Board Directive for the Management of Expenditures on Travel, Hospitality and Conferences, this report provides information on the total annual expenditures of Library and Archives Canada for travel, hospitality and conferences in the fiscal year ending March 31, 2011.

This information is updated annually and does not contain information withheld under the Access to Information Act or Privacy Act.

Expenditures for travel, hospitality and conferences incurred by federal departments and agencies are, for the most part, directly related to supporting departmental mandate(s) and the priorities of the Government of Canada.

The Library and Archives of Canada Act came into force in 2004 and created Library and Archives Canada (LAC) with a mandate to:

  • preserve the documentary heritage of Canada for the benefit of present and future generations;
  • serve as a source of enduring knowledge accessible to all, contributing to the cultural, social, and economic advancement of Canada as a free and democratic society;
  • facilitate in Canada co-operation among the communities involved in the acquisition, preservation, and diffusion of knowledge;
  • serve as the continuing memory of the Government of Canada and its institutions.

As part of its mandate and to meet the challenges of digital information, LAC has begun to modernize its operations. LAC has worked in consultation with other institutions at home and abroad to ensure that the documentary heritage acquired is preserved and made accessible, not only for current users, but also for users of future generations. This type of consultation and research is needed to cope with the many changes that technology brings to the scope of information. In Canada, LAC works closely with various partners that share the same mandate, such as universities, provincial institutions and private organizations. LAC is also involved internationally working to find solutions to the many challenges of the digital age and establishing standards that facilitate collaboration between countries in this regard.
