Abstract
On April 14, 1942, the Department of National Defence expropriated Stoney Point Reserve 4 3 in order to erect an advanced military training camp. The expropriation required the physical removal of the band to neighbouring Kettle Point Reserve 4 4. There is no published examination of the affair to date. This work serves as a general, yet comprehensive review, of the political, economic and social contexts of the event. "It Happened as if Overnight" is a detailed examination of the expropriation and relocation of a small Native community in Southwestern Ontario. Three key themes are examined, including land policy development from 1830 to 1939, bureaucratic management of Native affairs, and intra-band resistance to the expropriation from 1947 to present day on the issues of loss, identity and redress. Using an ethnohistorical approach, this work draws on government documents, oral interviews, maps and fieldwork. The study is a unique contribution to the field of Government/Native relations in Canada, land dispossession and forced relocation.
