Abstract
During the Caste War of the Yucatan (1847-1901) the Maya sustained their independence through cultural strength, religious millenarian beliefs, political instability within Yucatan and Mexico, and, as this thesis addresses, the supply of arms which came from the neighbouring British colony, Belize. The British arms supply to the Maya during the Caste War is often neglected or assumed, without much thought to the British motivation. As this thesis explored, the British supplied arms to the Maya for reasons including imperial competition with the United States, the need to expand logging areas, commercial gain, and the personal agendas of individual British landowners, such as John Hodge, in Belize.
