Abstract
<?Pub Inc> Pentecostalism, one of Christianity's fastest growing sects, employs an expressive and experiential form of worship. Pentecostals understand and interpret these worship experiences as spiritual encounters with their deity. I examine these worship phenomena--spiritual trance, ecstatic speech, etc.--against the social science descriptions of mystical and altered state of consciousness (ASC) experiences. Using the findings from observations, interviews, and a brief survey, which indicates that Pentecostals consider these phenomena purely from a theological perspective, I describe differences from and parallels to the social science description of ASC experiences. Based on this evidence, I argue that these phenomena are indeed mystical and ASC experiences. Additionally, in an attempt to bridge the chasm between science and religion and among religions, I employ the metaphor of a garden visit and argue that, at its root, the experience of Pentecostals is not a religious experience but one that is available to all human beings, inside and outside religion.
