Cataloguing in Publication

Cataloguing in Publication (CIP) is a voluntary program offered free of charge to Canadian publishers by Library and Archives Canada (LAC). Its purpose is to produce standardized bibliographic descriptions for forthcoming Canadian publications. Once the cataloguing is complete, publishers receive this information in the form of a CIP data block, which they are asked to place on the back of the title page of the book.

Cataloguing records created by the CIP Program appear in LAC's online catalogue and are shared with the national and international library communities.

Note: CIP services for French-language publishers based in Quebec are provided by Bibliothèque et Archives nationales du Québec (BAnQ). These publishers should contact BAnQ to verify their eligibility for CIP services.
