As lead co-chair of the worldwide Open Government Partnership, the Government of Canada is hosting the organization’s 6th Global Summit in Ottawa, from May 29-31, 2019. Over 2,000 Open Government champions from dozens of countries are attending this event. The goal is to share knowledge and create solutions together that will foster open and transparent governments around the globe.
Canada’s priorities for the Summit are participation and inclusion. LAC’s very own Project Naming initiative was selected to demonstrate the Government of Canada’s commitment to these priorities.
For over 15 years now, Project Naming has enabled First Nations, Inuit and Métis Nation peoples to identify individuals, activities and places in the archival photos found in our collection. By collaborating with Indigenous people, we can add context and identity to the historical records helping community members connect with their past and foster intergenerational bridges.
A short video highlighting the project was presented during the Summit’s opening ceremony.
