Biography/Administrative history:

Shadbolt, Doris, 1918-2003 : Doris Shadbolt was born in 1918 in Preston, Ontario. Curator, critic and writer, she and her painter husband, made the name "Shadbolt" synonymous with West Coast art. In 1988, in collaboration, they founded the Vancouver Institute for the Visual Arts (VIVA).

General note:

This portrait is one part of two drawings that make up a dual portrait. Grey executed this drawing in coloured pastels, while the accompanying portrait is drawn using monochrome pastels. When displaying, the monochrome is on the left, the colour on the right.
