Collection consists of films containing extensive footage of early N.H.L. games from the 1940s to the 1950s, showing the style of the game at the time with emphasis on skating and puck handling. Moving images also document hockey games, hockey documentaries with tributes to King Clancy, and Charlie Conacher, ice events and events at Maple Leaf Gardens (Toronto Symphony and Ringling Barnum and Bailey Circus), roller skating, interviews with famous sportsmen, and advertisements, 1930s-1970s. The recordings show many players at the height of their career including Maurice Richard, Gordie Howe, King Clancy, Edie Shack, Syl Apps, Doug Harvey, Jean Béliveau, and Charlie Conacher. Also featured are hockey personnel Johnnie Bower, Terry Sawchuck, and coaches and mangers such as Punch Imlach, Joe Blake, Lester Patrick, and league officials including Clarence Campbell and Red Story.

Also included in collection are sound recordings including interviews by Brian McFarlane with Frank King Clancy, assistant general manager of the Toronto Maple Leafs, about his career in hockey, hockey celebrities and the Toronto Maple Leafs, 1967-1968.

Collection also includes photographs depicting hockey teams including the Inkerman Rockets, 1950-1951, and the Winchester St. Hockey Team, 1916-1917; and hockey players as follows: Denis Potvin, Brad Park, Brian Trottier, Bobby Clark, Guy Lafleur, Ken Dryden, and Lanny MacDonald. Also included are photographs of Brian McFarlane; various events associated with Maple Leaf Gardens; Toronto Maple Leafs in training camp; Conn Smythe and Dick Irvin; and Frank King Clancy.

McFarlane, Brian, 1931- : Brian McFarlane, hockey commentator and broadcaster, was born in 1931. For twenty-seven years McFarlane worked as broadcaster for the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation's Hockey night in Canada series. He also worked as a commentator on NBC, CBS, and ESPN. McFarlane is the author of more than forty books including The Best of It Happened in Hockey; Stanley Cup Fever; and the first five titles the Original Six series.
