    Scope and content:
Series consists of subject files arranged in alphabetical order by subject. The files contain letters to Macdonald on prominent post-Confederation topics. These topics range from "Alaska Boundary" to "Wrecking on the Great Lakes". Among the most voluminous subjects are appointments, railways, Washington Treaties of 1871 and 1888, Confederation, federal elections, Fenians and North West Rebellions. There are also extensive subject files containing correspondence from each of the Governors General from Head to Lord Stanley. The files contain correspondence, memoranda, maps and pamphlets. Oversize material in Vols. 599-618, 625 and 626 predominently consists of election posters, but there are also newspapers and minutes of meetings.
