    Jean-Baptiste de La Brosse, jésuite français, arrive au Canada en 1754. Il consacre sa vie à la cause missionnaire et amérindienne. Son ministère couvre les deux rives du Saint-Laurent ainsi que l'Acadie, l'île Saint-Jean (Ile-du-Prince-Edouard) et l'île du Cap-Breton. Il oeuvre notamment pour l'alphabétisation et rédige des dictionnaires abénaquis et montagnais.
