    Biography/Administrative history:
Farmer, William, 1794-1880 (family): William Farmer (1794-1880) was a Shropshire farmer who emigrated to Canada in 1834 in the Kingston of Liverpool, a vessel which he chartered to transport his party of 55 persons, which included his wife, children, servants and their families, as well as 56 head of farming stock, and all their farming equipment, furniture and other possessions. From the Wright family, William Farmer leased the Gatineau Falls farm in Hull Township, Lower Canada, about six miles from Bytown, and tried to establish a sawmilling business on the Gatineau River. The enterprise failed, however, and had to be turned over to Alonzo Wright in 1846. In 1855, Farmer and his family moved to Canada West and eventually settled at Ancaster, near Hamilton, in 1860.
