Fonds consists of the records of the Canadian Writers' Foundation and its predecessor, the Canadian Authors' Foundation. The records have been arranged in two series: the Canadian Authors' Foundation files and the Canadian Writers' Foundation files.

The fonds also includes undated photographs, consisting of portraits of the writers Margaret Marshall Saunders, Duncan Campbell Scott, Dr. Pelham Edgar, P.D. Ross, and Sir Charles G.D. Roberts.

Canadian Writers' Foundation : The Canadian Writers' Foundation began its existence in 1931 as the Canadian Authors' Foundation, which was established at the instigation of Canadian literary scholar and critic Pelham Edgar, and with the help of editor and critic Lorne Pierce and poet Duncan Campbell Scott. Its goal was to provide financial assistance to impoverished Canadian authors, and poet Sir Charles G.D. Roberts and author Marshall Saunders were among its early beneficiaries. The Canadian Writers' Foundation was incorporated in 1945, adopting its current name and setting out its purpose as being to "create, provide and enlarge a perpetual fund for the benefit of any man or woman of distinction in Canadian letters...when such...shall find themselves in destitution". Among its directors have been the Dominion Archivist Gustave Lanctôt, diplomat Jean Bruchési, National Film Board Commissioner A.W. Trueman, and historian C.P. Stacey.

Arrangement of the records in vols. 1-13 maintained the original order, as received at the Archives. The material in vols. 14-32 was arranged into sub-series, following the Foundation's filing system.
