The collection consists of 61 photographs by John Garo, 2 photographs by Yousuf Karsh which belonged to Garo, and various magazines, clippings and correspondence related to Garo's career and his relationship with Yousuf Karsh.

The collection also consists of 11 painted sketches by John Garo, in oil and watercolour.

The collection also contains a few snapshots of John Garo, and of a bust of John Garo.

Garo, John H, b. 1870-d. 1939 : John H. Garoian was born in Kharpet, Turkish Armenia in 1870, became an artist, and then immigrated to Worcester Massachusetts at age 14 to join his brother-in-law. He worked as an illustrator for the Whitney Valentine Co. in Worcester, but at age 16 moved to Boston where he apprenticed to several commerical photographers. At the same time he attended evening classes at the Normal Art School to learn sketching and painting. In 1902 at age 27 he opened a custom designed photographic studio near the Boston Public Library. He soon established an international reputation as a portrait and landscape photographer, and exhibited at American and international art and photographic salons. His photographic work was published in the leading photographic journals of the day, including The Camera, Wilson's Photographic Magazine, and American Photography, amongst others. Because of his unique use of composition and light he was perceived as an artist who chose photography as his medium. He photographed subjects using only natural daylight, using extensive skylights in his studio to make this possible.

In 1928, Armenian born Canadian photographer Yousuf Karsh was sent to Garo for a three year apprenticeship. Garo's portraiture techniques, and especially his use of light had a strong and lasting influence on Yousuf Karsh.
