Sub-series consists of central registry subject files created by the Dominion Lands Branch. These numerically arranged subject files contain letters addressed to various officials of the department. They bear on every aspect of resource management, and land administration, sales and settlement. They include departmental memoranda and other relevant documents, as well as general ruling and policy files dealing with the Métis scrip commissions, Military Bounty, and North-West Mounted Police land warrants. The files are arranged numerically from 1 to 5644152. The sub-series contains useful material on western settlement in general and on the settlements established by religious groups and colonization companies. After 1890, copies of replies to correspondence are frequently attached to the files. Volume 227 contains memoranda by N.O. Côté on the following subjects: Administration and Sales of Dominion Lands; Claims under the Manitoba Act; Métis Claims and Letters Patent for Dominion Lands. The general terminal date of the sub-series is the mid 1930's, but in a few instances files contain correspondence dated as late as 1946. Included at the beginning of this sub-series are the following sets of files: Department of State, files 8 to 1642 in 1871, 313 to 1824 in 1872, 386 to 2735 in 1873; Office to the Secretary of State, file 1087 in 1871; Office of the Secretary of State for the Provinces, files 1362 and 1376 in 1872, 1125 in 1873; Department of the Interior, files 1 to 265 in 1871, 590 to 1632 in 1872, 55 to 2624 in 1873, then from 55 to 5,693,470. The records in our holdings are from file 19A which started in March 1905 to 149563A which started in February 1906, volumes 964 to 984.
