Access to Information, Privacy and Personnel Records

The Access to Information Act provides any Canadian citizen, permanent resident or corporation present in Canada with a right to access information in records under the control of a federal government institution. This information is subject to limited and specific exceptions. Please refer to the exemptions (sections 13 to 26) and exclusions (sections 68 and 69) of the Act.

The Privacy Act provides any Canadian citizen or permanent resident in Canada with a right to access, correct or attach a correction request to his/her personal information that is under the control of a federal government institution. The personal information, however, is subject to limited and specific exceptions. Please refer to the exemptions (sections 18 to 28) and exclusions (sections 69 and 70) of the Act.

While some of the federal government records under the control of Library and Archives Canada (LAC) are available to the public, many are subject to review under the requirements of the Access to Information Act and the Privacy Act.
