Abstract
This qualitative study aimed to describe the experiences of gay men living with HIV/AIDS in relation to mental health services. Transcendental Phenomenology was the qualitative research approach that guided the analysis of the study. The tenets and principles of community-based research were also followed in the present study. 12 co-researchers all of whom had the experience of receiving both individual counselling and engaging in participatory programs at an HIV/AIDS community-based organization, were interviewed using semi-structured interview formats in order to gain their deep rich perspectives on being gay and living with HIV/AIDS. The results of this inquiry are represented in terms of an empowerment model, which leads to implications for mental health professionals, care givers, and significant others.
