Thematic Guides - Canadian Corporation for the 1967 World Exhibition

This guide consists of a history, specific references to government sources and a selected bibliography on the Canadian Corporation for the 1967 World Exhibition, also known as Expo '67.

This guide was revised in September 2000.

1. History

On November 13, 1962, Canada was chosen by the International Bureau to be the host of the 1967 Universal and International Exhibition (also known as Expo '67). In light of this situation, Parliament authorized the incorporation of the Canadian Corporation for the 1967 World Exhibition (CCWE) on December 20, 1962. The Government of Canada, the Government of the Province of Quebec, and the City of Montreal concluded an agreement on January 18, 1963 defining their obligations and responsibilities to the Corporation and establishing the contribution of each of those levels of government to the funds required for the capital and operational expenditures of the Corporation.

The Corporation was led by a Commissioner General, who was also the President and Chief Executive Officer of the Corporation, a Deputy Commissioner General, who was the Vice-President of the Corporation, and an Office Manager. A Board of Directors was also established which consisted of fourteen directors, with the Commissioner General and the Deputy Commissioner General mandatory Board members. In 1963, the Incorporation Act was amended and the number of directors was increased to sixteen and an Executive Committee of the Board was established. The Corporation reported to Parliament through the Department of Trade and Commerce. While Expo was separate from the Centennial Celebrations, some events were organized in co-operation with the Centennial Commission.

Expo '67 was held from April 28 to October 27, 1967. Sixty-one countries, including Canada, participated. The theme was "Man and His World." Fifty million people visited the exposition.

In 1969, the Corporation was abolished as its creation act was repealed by the Expo Winding-Up Act.
