A specialist on the history of Saint-Malo, France, Gilles Foucqueron is also the author of the book Jacques Cartier : explorateur du Canada [Jacques Cartier: Explorer of Canada]. Born in Saint-Malo, Brittany, Jacques Cartier remains today one of the best-known mariners in the world. Who hasn't heard of this explorer born in 1491 and his ambitious project to sail towards Cathay (now China ), land of the Great Khan, to discover a new route and new lands? It is to this captain from Saint-Malo, supported by King Francis I of France, that we owe the first pages of French-Canadian history.
