Watercolours done by Sir Daniel Wilson during his career in Canada. He travelled throughout Canada and the northeastern United States executing amateur views of native life, geological formations, major rivers and waterways, and landscape views of many wilderness areas in northern Ontario, Quebec and New England.

Wilson, Daniel, Sir, 1816-1892 : Sir Daniel Wilson was born in Edinburgh in 1816 and attended university there, graduating in 1837. He followed a literary career in London, and married in 1840. In 1842, he returned to Edinburgh to pursue studies in archaeology, and through his interest, met Lord Elgin, whose influence obtained for him an appointment as professor of history and literature at University College, Toronto in 1853. Thereafter he pursued an active career as an academic and educator, eventually being named as President of the University Council in 1890. He was also one of the founders of the Royal Society of Canada, and served as its vice-president in 1882. He pursued academic interests in native life, archaeology, geology, and paleontology, and is best known for coining the word "pre-historic". He published more than 80 titles in all. He died in Toronto in 1892, leaving one unmarried daughter to survive him. W. H. The 185 watercolours were acquired from the descendants of a niece of Sir Daniel Wilson.
